Artist statement on the artwork:
"Smoke and Bones" emerged from the artist's introspective visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where the life and work of Vincent van Gogh left a profound impact. Deeply moved by Van Gogh’s turbulent existence and the unbreakable bond with his brother, Theo, the artist created this piece as a tribute to Van Gogh’s relentless pursuit of expressing the complexities of the human condition.
Inspired by Van Gogh's anatomical studies, "Smoke and Bones" captures the delicate balance between life and decay. The skeletal form represents the fragility of human existence, while the lit cigarette symbolizes the fleeting nature of life, burning persistently even in the face of adversity. This artwork juxtaposes the impermanence of life with the enduring memory of those who live passionately, echoing Van Gogh’s own introspections.
The piece is enveloped in blue hues, imbuing the skeletal figure with an eerie luminescence that reflects the inner glow of a soul caught between despair and hope. "Smoke and Bones" channels the essence of Van Gogh’s artistic journey—marked by joy and sorrow, yet always driven by an unwavering dedication to art and the powerful love of a brother. This work serves as a poignant reminder that even in our most vulnerable forms, a spark remains that illuminates the shadows of existence.
